Episode 98 – Helping Teens Through a Parent’s Deployment

helping teens navigate a parent's deployment

Milspouse Matters Ep. 98 with Jen McDonald

On this Quick Tips episode, I’m sharing some strategies to help your teen navigate a parent’s deployment.

So often, deployment resources are geared towards younger children, and while that’s important of course, and I’ve also covered it before on several episodes, today we are focusing on helping our teenagers through a parent’s deployment.

This info is from part of a talk I gave during the amazing and supportive PILLAR deployment retreat in fall 2022 about helping your teens—and yourself!—through a parent’s deployment. And speaking of, be looking for more info about the 2023 Pillar retreat in the coming months. I’ll be speaking again about relating with your inlaws both from the perspective of a military spouse AND a mom of military.

Teens are so amazing, challenging, and wonderful, all at the same time. Helping our teens get through the deployment of a parent is a privilege, but it’s a time that we can use all the help we can get. Our military family went through multiple deployments, and one of my claims to fame is getting through a year-long deployment of my husband when all four of my kids were teenagers at the same time. If I can do it, you can do it, too! We’ll talk about some practical tips for helping teens navigate this tough time, as well as finding support for YOU.
