Time for some reading updates! My latest book picks are mostly fiction, with of course a heavy emphasis on cozy mysteries, which 1) I adore and 2) read a lot of since the book I’m currently writing is in that genre.

In fact, I read and watch so many cozies on TV that my husband has asked if he should be worried. Hmm….I’m not certain what draws some of us to murder mysteries. Maybe because it’s like solving a puzzle and that aha! moment when you’ve figured it out.

When it comes to how I read a book, I love every format! Kindle for when I’m going to sleep, so I don’t have to worry about a light, audiobooks for when I’m on the go, running, walking the dog, or doing housework, and of course there’s nothing like the feel of a print book in your hand.

I’d love to hear: what’s your favorite book format? And what’s your favorite genre?

My Must-Read Books for 2025 (so far)

Holding On and Letting Go by Lindsay Swoboda

A brand new book from military spouse Lindsay Swoboda! This is the only non-fiction book on this post’s list. Lindsay chronicles her journey as a dancer and military spouse, navigating the challenges of frequent relocations and deployments, all while trying to include her own passions somehow. She creates a dance program in Korea, finds healing in unexpected places like Morocco, and offers a heartfelt exploration of what it means to lean into change while letting go of what no longer serves. Lindsay’s storytelling is gripping and beautiful, and reminds us of the beauty found in life’s transitions and changes.

Cassandra in Reverse by Holly Smale

If you could rewind time and fix your past mistakes, would you? On the worst day of her life, Cassie Dankworth realizes she can change the comforting predictability of her life. With amazing references to a deep knowledge of Greek mythology and a look at living neurodivergent, this women’s fiction/fantasy is not the type of book I’d normally choose, but I was engrossed from page one. This is going on my list of favorite books for sure.

The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan

Nina Redmond, a librarian facing job loss, decides to move to the Scottish Handlands to open a bookmobile. While her goal is to bring literature to remote communities, she’s surprised by some new beginnings and unexpected connections for herself. I bought this book at a Dublin bookshop while traveling to read on the flight home, and will admit I was sucked in by the cover. This is women’s fiction/romance, again another genre I don’t typically read!

Murder at the Bookstore by Sue Minix

If you love a good cozy mystery, this one is for you. Small town intrigue, endless cups of coffee, and a bookstore await! A mystery writer returns to her hometown and becomes embroiled in a real-life murder investigation. As she delves into the case, danger lurks closer than expected. This is the first in a series of six books.

Bummer Camp by Ann Garvin

After years of distancing herself from the family business and creating her own life, Cat McCarthy returns to her family’s struggling summer camp to save it from financial ruin. Packed full of quirky characters and humorous, chaotic situations, Cat discovers the importance of family, belonging, and embracing your roots. This would be a great beach read!

The Printed Letter Bookshop by Katherine Reay

I picked this one up thinking it was a mystery, and while it has some hints of that, it’s definitely more women’s literary fiction. Hmmm… another bookstore setting! I’m seeing a theme here. Exploring complicated family relationships, the importance of friendship, and realizing that what we’ve been told isn’t always the full truth, this book is set in a charming town and follows the journeys of several women at different stages in life. Loved this one!

Strawberry Shortcake Murder by Joanne Fluke

I had to include one more cozy mystery on this list! From prolific author Joanne Fluke, we meet up with again with amateur sleuth Hannah Swensen. In the quaint town of Lake Eden, bakery owner Hannah judges a dessert contest that turns deadly. As she investigates, she uncovers secrets and motives in the little town, all while sharing delectable recipes with readers. You can’t go wrong with a Joanne Fluke cozy!
