It seems our favorite foods often have a happy memory associated with them. Spring and summertime call for some of my favorite childhood foods: grilled hamburgers, homemade ice cream (using the old-fashioned mixer with a hand crank that we all took turns with until we felt like our arms would drop—but no ice cream ever tasted better), and fruit cobbler.

This blueberry cobbler recipe comes from my paternal grandmother and was likely passed down to her by her mother. It works with pretty much any fresh or frozen fruit: peaches, berries, apricots, cherries. My favorite take on this is with blueberries. It’s a no-fail recipe and SO easy! Really foolproof. Enjoy!

Grandma’s Blueberry Cobbler

Heat oven to 350˚F

Melt one stick of butter in the bottom of a 9″ x 13″ pan.

Mix together and pour over the melted butter:

  • 1 & 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1 & 1/2 c. flour
  • 2 t. baking powder
  • 1/2 t. salt
  • 1 c. milk

Mix together in a saucepan and bring to a boil, then simmer for 10 minutes:

  • 4 cups sliced fruit
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water or juice from fruit

Pour fruit and all juice over batter. Don’t mix! It’s going to look strange right now, but trust me, the batter will rise through the fruit and make an unbelievably yummy crust.

Bake for one hour.

Top with a dollop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream and enjoy!
