What makes our homeschool unique? I posed that question to one of my children this week, and her (very honest) answer was:
  • “You’re weird”
  • being a military family

Weird? ME?

(Because, obviously, this is the face you make when your daughter wants to take your photo at the Keukenhof Gardens in Holland.)
Ok, so whatever. I’m a little quirky. There was a time I thought being a homeschool mom meant I needed to be oh-so-straightlaced, but I got over that. I really try to create fun, memorable moments where I can. So, as far as homeschooling goes, we have our own little way of doing things, which over the years has meant:
  • trying to best suit each kid’s learning style, while challenging them past what’s comfortable
  • lots of read-alouds, games, movies, and together time
  • taking breaks when we need them (My kids have learned how to play this…they often bat their cute little eyes and say things like, “Can we just go to the library or do art? That’s educational.” And I often say, “YES.” Childhood is short, people. )

And, we’re a military family. Which means that change is our norm, whether it’s deployments, moving from one side of the world to the other, or working around strange schedules (which may explain the “weirdness” on some level). We’ve started over so many times, which has really cultivated a closeness in our family. We’ve homeschooled out of suitcases more times than I can count, have done some incredible travel, and have had some amazing experiences.

But when I think about the question, “What makes my homeschool unique?” as far as any family goes, I would say:
Embrace your individuality, your circumstances, your family. Be who God created you to be and not a poor copy of what you think “it should be.”
Be you. I bet you’re pretty cool, just the way you are.
